Autumn leaves!
My American father in Law was so kind to share his little story about the pile of autumn leaves in his hometown Saint Louis. His wife Ann added her input so here is a capture of it.
Every autumn, in Saint Louis, Missouri, the trees are amazingly beautiful.
However, after this short period of enjoying this part of the year (crispy air, sunshine, nice smells, etc.) the leaves started to fall…and fall…
Then the work begins. Every citizen is cleaning up his own drive way and yards. They work on the streets too to get them free of leaves. This work goes on, until the piles are immensely high.
Then the city comes in. The city where they live in picks up the leaves 3 times each Fall between the middle of October and the middle of December. They pick up the leaves by means of a vacuuming system that sucks the leaves up and blow them into an enclosure fitted on to a truck. The dump trucks, that the city workers have, are not large dump trucks, but average to small ones.
The city takes the leaves to their mulch site, and over the winter, the leaves become quite good rich mulch. In the spring, city residents can pick up the mulch free, or city workers, who have their own trucks, will deliver the mulch to you during their lunch break or after work for about 60 dollars for a large dump truck load or 30 dollars for a small load. The mulch is used in gardens, flower gardens, or around other plantings. Most homes in this city have lots from about 3/4 of an acre to some over 5 acres, so there are many trees producing leaves and many garden and landscaping areas that need mulch.
